How to clean your sunglasses

Cleaning your sunglasses is an important part of maintaining their longevity and effectiveness. Dirty lenses can obstruct your vision and make it difficult to see clearly, which can be a hazard when driving, playing sports, or engaging in other activities that require good vision. In this guide, we will provide a step-by-step process for cleaning your sunglasses and share tips on how to keep them in good condition.

Step 1: Gather Your Cleaning Supplies

Before you begin cleaning your sunglasses, you will need to gather the following supplies:

  1. A clean, soft cloth (preferably a microfiber cloth)

  2. A bowl of lukewarm water

  3. Lotion free dish soap or a specialized lens cleaner, we like (AR) Anti-Reflective cleaning solutions.

  4. Optional: lens cleaning solution and a lens cleaning brush

It is important to use a clean cloth to avoid scratching the lenses. A microfiber cloth is ideal as it is gentle on the lenses and will not leave any lint or residue behind. Avoid using paper towels, napkins, or tissues, as they can scratch the lenses.

Step 2: Rinse Your Sunglasses

Hold your sunglasses under running water to rinse off any loose dirt or debris. Be sure to use lukewarm water, as hot water can damage the lenses. Avoid using cold water, as it may not be as effective at removing dirt and grime.

Step 3: Apply Lotion free Dish Soap or Lens Cleaner

Add a small amount of dish soap to the lukewarm water and mix it gently. Alternatively, you can use a specialized lens cleaner. Apply a few drops of the cleaning solution to each lens and gently rub it in using your fingers.

Step 4: Rinse Your Sunglasses Again

Hold your sunglasses under running water again to rinse off the soap or cleaning solution. Be sure to rinse thoroughly, as any leftover soap or cleaner can leave streaks or residue on the lenses.

Step 5: Dry Your Sunglasses

Gently shake off any excess water and then use a clean, soft cloth to dry your sunglasses. Start at the top of the lenses and work your way down, using gentle circular motions to remove any remaining water droplets. Be sure to dry the frames and earpieces as well.

Step 6: Optional: Use Lens Cleaning Solution and Brush

If your sunglasses have stubborn dirt or debris that is difficult to remove, you can use a lens cleaning solution and brush. Apply a few drops of the cleaning solution to the brush and gently scrub the lenses, being careful not to apply too much pressure. Rinse the lenses with lukewarm water and dry them as described in Step 5.

Tips for Keeping Your Sunglasses Clean

In addition to cleaning your sunglasses regularly, there are several other things you can do to keep them in good condition:

  1. Store your sunglasses in a protective case when not in use. This will help prevent scratches, dents, and other damage.

  2. Avoid leaving your sunglasses in hot or humid environments, as this can damage the lenses and frames.

  3. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners on your sunglasses, as they can scratch the lenses or damage the frames.

  4. Use a specialized lens cleaning solution or dish soap to clean your sunglasses. Avoid using vinegar, bleach, or ammonia, as they can damage the lenses.

  5. If your sunglasses have prescription lenses, be sure to follow your eye doctor's instructions for cleaning and maintaining them.

  6. Do not wipe your sunglasses with your clothing, as this can transfer dirt and oils onto the lenses.

  7. Avoid touching the lenses with your fingers, as this can leave fingerprints and oils that are difficult to remove.

  8. Clean your sunglasses regularly, especially if you wear them frequently and especially after a day at the beach in the salt air.
