Eye exams for children are an important part of their health care. Regular eye exams help to ensure that your child’s vision is developing properly and that any vision problems can be identified and treated early. It is recommended that children have their first eye exam between six and 12 months of age, and then every two years thereafter until they reach the age of 18.
When your child is having their first eye exam, the eye doctor will be assessing whether or not their vision is developing normally. This exam is usually done with a series of charts that test the child’s ability to distinguish between shapes and colors and to identify letters, numbers, or other symbols. The doctor may also use a lighted device to check the eye muscles’ movements and may use drops to enlarge the pupils in order to get a better view of the inside of the eye.

At this point, the doctor may also recommend that your child receive a comprehensive eye exam. This type of exam is more detailed and is used to check for any vision problems, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, or amblyopia, which is also known as “lazy eye.” The doctor will also check the health of the eye, including the retina, the lens, the cornea, and the optic nerve.
In addition to regular eye exams, it’s also important to be aware of any signs or symptoms that may indicate a vision problem. These signs may include squinting, headaches, holding objects too close to the face, avoiding activities that require prolonged periods of near vision, or short attention spans during reading.
